<p>The first autonomous tram is set to go into operation in Potsdam, Germany in 2018. Developed by Siemens, using similar technology to autonomous cars such as radar and lidar combined with artificial intelligence, the tram can respond to obstructions and hazards in its path and safely make stops.</p>

<p>Currently, the tram still has a human driver on board to take control if necessary. Siemens says the tram isn't yet commercially viable so we're not expecting these to roll out across the rest of Potsdam just yet, but the data gathered will be useful for other autonomous vehicle projects.</p>
